If you're a woman over the age of 35 in the U.S., it's critical that you can both understand and detect the warning signs of breast cancer. After lung cancer, it is the second most prominent cancer in the world and it is the most diagnosed cancer amongst women in the United States – affecting 1 in 8 women nationwide. So, what are the symptoms and early warning signs associated with this disease and how can you detect them? Keep reading to find out. Lump in the Breast The first obvious symptom or early warning signs of breast cancer are often a lump or lumps found in the breast. This lump usually feels different from the surrounding breast tissue – making it easy to detect. In fact, over 80% of breast cancer cases in the U.S. are detected by the patient, women who have found a lump in their breast and contacted their doctor. Changes in Breast Size Another indication of breast cancer is a noticeable change in the shape or size of the breast. Other symptoms along this vein include dimpling of the skin, inverted nipples, or spontaneous nipple discharge. Skin Inflammation IBC, also known as inflammatory breast cancer, often reveals itself as an inflammation of the skin. Symptoms of this strain of breast cancer include swelling, redness, heat or warmth throughout the breast, an orange peel texture to the skin and possible pain or irritation. Paget's Disease Another possible symptom of breast cancer is what is often referred to as Paget's. This syndrome appears as eczematoid skin, meaning it appears red, dry and flaky around the nipple and possibly other parts of the breast. Advance symptoms include itching, tingling and increased sensitivity or a burning sensation. About 50 percent of women diagnosed with Paget's also have a lump on their breast. Other Related Diseases Many of the symptoms associated with breast cancer are also indicative of other, non-cancer-related diseases list mastitis or fibroadenoma. While the appearance of any breast cancer symptom should be taken very seriously, it's also important that your doctor rule out the potential of other diseases associated with these symptoms. Detecting the Symptoms of Breast Cancer Your best defense against breast cancer and your best tool for detecting the early warning signs of breast cancer is an annual mammogram at your doctor's office or local radiologist's. With mammography, false positives are a definite possibility, so always obtain a second mammogram along with a possible biopsy. Your other tool? Self breast exams.
