Stages of prostate cancer are important for every man to know, as prostate cancer doesn't really discriminate when it comes to those who are at risk. All men are potentially at risk, so all men should know the facts.
Early stages of prostate cancer are pretty well concealed since there are no unique symptoms.
So even if you know the details of the stages and you are a man in his middle age or part of a high risk group, you should make sure you go to your doctor for regular check-ups and screening processes so you are sure to see the signs of any of the stages of prostate cancer.
Stage 1 Prostate Cancer
The earliest of the stages of prostate cancer, in stage one the cancer is only found in the prostate. At this stage, the cancer cannot be felt with a digital rectal examination and will not be found in regular screening.
Early stages of prostate cancer do not have any real tell-tale symptoms, and as such stage one prostate cancer is probably only going to be found by accident.
Basically, you'd have to be getting surgery for a totally different reason and your doctor would just stumble onto the cancer.
Stage 2 Prostate Cancer
In stage two, the cancer is still only located in the prostate, but at this point it can be felt with a digital rectal exam. The lump will be larger and it will be possible for your doctor to begin to determine how quickly the cancer will spread.
The Gleason score, which can be anywhere from 2-10, is used as an indicator as to how quickly the cancer will spread.
The lower the score, the less quickly it is likely to grow. In stage two, your doctor will be able to give you your Gleason score.
Stage 3 Prostate Cancer
In the third stage of prostate cancer, the cancer is no longer localized to inside the prostate. At this point it will have spread to nearby tissues and perhaps the seminal vesicles.
Once again, your doctor will use the Gleason score to determine how quickly the cancer is growing and how fast any tumors will spread.
Stage 4 Prostate Cancer
When the cancer metastasizes, or spreads, to other parts of the body, that is stage four, the last of the stages of prostate cancer.
In this stage the cancer will have spread to nearby lymph nodes and other organs like the bladder, rectum or liver. Stage four prostate cancer also often spreads to the bones.
