The Relay for Life Cancer Walk is the American Cancer Society's primary fundraising tool. During the event, teams of participants camp out at a local location and take turns walking or running. The events are overnight and some can go as long as 24 hours. More than 3.5 million people have participated in the relay - raising millions of dollars in much-needed cancer research and support funds. The event is popular as all team members can participate, basing their participation level on their physical ability. How Much to Fund Raise The American Cancer Society recommends that most individual participants should raise at least $100. If you're unable to raise the $100, you're still welcome to participate in any and all Relay for Life Cancer Walk events. While $100 may seem like a lot for many people, think of it as just $10 per person from 10 different people. By reaching out to family, friends, work mates and others, the goal is surprisingly much easier to reach than you think. The only requirement to participate in the event is a minimum $10 registration fee to cover the administration costs of registration and the expense of running the actual event. The events website - http://relayforlife.org - offers an extensive section which provides a variety of fundraising advice and tools. This section also includes messages, comments and ideas from other successful fundraisers. Ideas like hosting a car wash, throwing a bake sale or organizing a community trunk sale. These are all real ideas that have worked in real communities. Starting or Joining a Team Participants can either start their own team with a group of friends or workmates or they can join an existing team. By registering at the event website, listed above, they can search for local teams in their area that are looking for participants. This is a great idea for people who are new to area or who maybe just want to meet new people while doing something for a good cause. How the Funds Are Used When anyone makes a donation to the American Cancer Society - all the funds are tracked and used to either support cancer research or increase cancer awareness. About 14% of funds go directly to research, 20% go towards cancer prevention, 20% are earmarked for cancer patient support, 16% are set aside for diagnosis and treatment, 8% are for general management and administration, and 22% are used for future fundraising efforts. Who Runs the Event The Relay for Life Cancer Walk is an international event that is community run - meaning its organized and managed by each individual, hosting community.
