To screen for prostate cancer, your doctor will take blood and perform a PSA, or prostate-specific antigen, test. A PSA test screens for elevated PSA levels, which can indicate prostate problems.
Because elevated PSA levels doesn't necessarily mean cancer, other tests, like urine tests, ultrasounds or a digital rectal exam might be necessary. A biopsy is necessary to decidedly diagnose cancer.
How do you treat prostate cancer?
There are three ways to treat prostate cancer. The most common, because prostate cancer is so slow growing, is watching and waiting.
Active therapies include radiation therapy and removal of the prostate, or a radical prostatectomy.
Is prostate cancer fatal?
Prostate cancer is one of the least fatal types of cancer. Even if it goes untreated for years, most men will not die from prostate cancer.
That is not to say that prostate cancer should go untreated. If a man is in a high risk group, has an enlarged prostate or has a family history of prostate cancer, they should go to a doctor with all your prostate cancer questions.
And answers may require tests or simply waiting, so make sure you get all the information necessary either way.
