Enlarged Prostate Symptom: An Enlarged Prostate Is a Symptom of Many Things

Enlarged prostate symptom lists are almost identical whether you are suffering from prostatitis, benign prostatic hyperplasia or prostate cancer.

All of those illnesses, as well as other pelvic inflammations, abnormalities or infections can cause an enlarged prostate. Symptom lists all revolve around pelvic pain, urinary discomfort and sexual dysfunction.

What is the Prostate?

A walnut-sized gland, the Prostate is a part of the male reproductive system. It surrounds the urethra, and is located just below the bladder. Your doctor will conduct a digital rectal exam to check the health of your prostate.

Prostatitis

A very general medical term, prostatitis is any inflammation of the prostate gland.

While the term does not cover every single instance of enlarged prostate, it can be applied to four specific types of inflammation: acute bacterial prostatitis, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic prostatitis without infection and asymptomatic inflammatory prostatitis.

Diagnosing prostatitis requires a urine sample which will be used for a common test called a urinalysis, needed in most cases for an enlarged prostate.

Symptom accounts should be given to your doctor. Other blood tests, like a PSA, or prostate surface antigen, test may be required as well.

BPH

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia is more common as men get older. Although it has the same symptoms as prostate cancer – much like most inflammations of the prostate - it is most definitely not cancer.

One thing BHP does have in common with prostate cancer is the fact that many men will not know they have it for quite a while after it develops.

There are no real symptoms at first, and symptoms won't develop until the prostate is enlarged to the point where it interferes with urinary or sexual function.

Fifty percent of men have evidence of BHP by the age of 50. Seventy five percent of men have evidence of BHP by the age of 75. It is incredibly important that men consult their doctor if they have an enlarged prostate.

Symptom development may be slow or may be because of BHP, but you must always remember that BHP has no unique symptoms and shares symptoms with prostate cancer.

Prostate Cancer

When cells in the prostate start to grow and divide at a rate more rapid than normal, and mutate or become abnormal, that is prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer develops very slowly, but when symptoms start to develop, they are similar to the symptoms found in any enlarged prostate.

Symptoms and side effects of an enlarged prostate should always be reported to your doctor so proper tests can be run and a correct diagnosis made.
