Breast cancer signs and symptoms should be common knowledge amongst women. It can help save your life if you take early notice of breast cancer signs. Symptoms may not actually be caused by cancer, but could just as easily be indicative of other health problems. Catching Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms Early A breast self-exam is the easiest way to catch early breast cancer signs. Symptoms will be more noticeable if you do self-examinations regularly and familiarize yourself with your body. This way changes are more noticeable. A doctor can also perform a clinical breast exam to feel for breast cancer signs. Symptoms can also be found when a doctor conducts an x-ray called a mammogram to find lumps or other breast cancer signs. Women over 40 should talk to their doctors about having regular mammograms or clinical breast exams. The Most Common Breast Cancer Signs: Lumps Finding a breast lump can be a traumatic experience for any woman. All lumps should be examined by a doctor to find the underlying cause, but in most cases breast lumps are not breast cancer signs. A biopsy will determine whether it is cancer. If a lump is hard, does not move or is accompanied by a discharge from the nipple, there is a greater chance of cancer. Multiple, soft, moving lumps means it is less likely to be breast cancer signs. But, again, a biopsy would be necessary to eliminate that possibility. Other Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms Along with lumps, there are other easily identified breast cancer signs. Symptoms include changes in size, shape or texture of the breast, a retraction, indentation, scaliness or redness of the nipple, thickening or dimpling of the skin on the breast, swelling in the armpit and bloody discharge from the nipple. These symptoms are not necessarily breast cancer signs. Symptoms of other conditions, like cysts, fibrocystic changes and even menstruation can be similar. Treating Breast Cancer Signs and Symptoms Plan your treatment for breast cancer signs with your doctor. Once your physician has determined the stage of the cancer you can move forward with treatment. If it is cancer, there are many treatments available to you: surgery, chemotherapy, radiation and hormonal therapy, for example. Symptoms should never be ignored! So be sure to go to a doctor and check out any breast cancer signs as soon as you notice any. See also: All Site Articles for Cancer Information Tips
